Importance of a One Health approach in advancing global health security and the sustainable development goals
In February 2014, a group of countries launched the World Health Security agenda with the aim of working together for “A world safe from infectious diseases that are threats to Global Health”. In addition, this vision is complemented by the Agenda for Sustainable Development of the United Nations, whose main mission is “Seek peace and prosperity for people and the planet now and in the future”. Considering that the “One Health” approach is defined as a: “Collaborative, multisectoral and transdisciplinary approach”, it is expected that it will have a positive impact in preserving Global Health and Health Security.
This approach supports Global Health Security by improving coordination, collaboration, and communication at the human-animal-environment interface to address shared health threats such as zoonotic diseases, antimicrobial resistance, food safety, and others.
This document invites us to reflect that the professionals who are responsible of implementing the “One Health” concept must collect relevant epidemiological data and information for governments and decision makers, to improve the implementation of public policies in “One Health”, and achieve sustainability.
